About the film

Ramayana: Part 1 is a 2026 Indian Hindi-language epic mythological film directed by Nitesh Tiwari, who co-wrote the screenplay with Shridhar Raghavan. Produced by Namit Malhotra and Yash, the film is based on the Hindu epic Ramayana by Valmiki. It is the first of a two-part film, with Part 1 being based on the first three kāṇḍa (chapters) of Ramayana which chronicles the life of Prince Rama from childhood up to his adventurous 14-year exile. The film stars Ranbir Kapoor, Yash (in his Hindi film debut), Sai Pallavi, Ravi Dubey (in his film debut), Sunny Deol, Anupam Kher, Kajal Aggarwal, Rakul Preet Singh, Vivek Oberoi, Kunal Kapoor, Adinath Kothare, Arun Govil, Indira Krishnan, and Lara Dutta.

The project was announced in May 2017 as a live-action adaptation of Valmiki's Ramayana, initially conceived as a trilogy by producers; following several years of development and script refinement, it was restructured as a two-part film series under Tiwari's sole direction.

Hans Zimmer and A. R. Rahman collaborated to compose the score, marking Zimmer's debut work in the Indian film industry. Filming began in April 2024 at Film City, Mumbai, and continued until July 2025. With an estimated combined budget of the duology being ₹4,000 crore (US$420 million), it is the most expensive Indian film ever made. It is also the most expensive non-English language film ever made.

Ramayana: Part 1 premiered at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures on 27 October 2026, and was released worldwide on 5 November. The film received mixed to positive reviews from critics. It is the 5th highest-grossing Hindi film of 2026 and 6th highest-grossing Indian film of 2026.
