The MTV Europe Music Awards "(EMA)" were established in 1994 by MTV Networks Europe to celebrate the most popular music videos in Europe. Originally beginning as an alternative to the American MTV Video Music Awards, the MTV Europe Music Awards is today a popular celebration of what MTV viewers consider the best in music. The awards are chosen by MTV viewers throughout Europe. The MTV Europe Music Awards always changes its host city.
The MTV Europe Music Awards, commonly abbreviated as EMAs, were awards presented by Paramount International Networks to recognise achievements in music and popular culture. Originally conceived as an alternative to the MTV Video Music Awards, which are held annually in the United States, the ceremony took place each year in a different country, predominantly in the United Kingdom and Germany. The annual event featured live performances by prominent artists and presentations of awards across a range of popular music categories.
The awards reflected the international music scene, recognising artists from different geographical regions and achievements across a diverse range of musical genres and disciplines. Since the 2007 ceremony, viewers have been able to vote for their favourite artists in the general categories through MTV's website.
The 1st Europe Music Awards ceremony was held in 1994 at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, Germany, five years after the fall of the Berlin Wall. The ceremony was broadcast live on MTV Europe, Channel 5 and various MTV channels internationally, as well as online.
